About the Project

The Maria Edgeworth Letters Project is a collaborative digital edition of letters written by Maria Edgeworth and shared by over 30 archives around the world.  We are currently in the process of transcribing these letters through the Zooniverse crowdsourcing platform with the goal of creating a fully searchable database of her letters. General editors of the project are Susan Egenolf, Meredith Hale, Hilary Havens, Jessica RichardRobin Runia.  Carrie Johnston is the project manager, and Bryan Tarpley is the technical editor. Site design by Kelsey Urgo.

Locations

This spreadsheet is a work-in-progress recording worldwide locations of Edgeworth letters. Contact us if you have information on archives holding letters written by Maria Edgeworth.

Letters

The current focus of the Maria Edgeworth Letters Project is on letters held at many institutions and archives worldwide (excluding letters held at the Bodleian and the National Library of Ireland). Below [coming soon!] are several samples of letters that have been photographed, transcribed, and TEI-coded.

Visualizations

A digital archive of Edgeworth’s letters will allow scholars to map her correspondence network, identify her extensive reading practice, nuance our understanding of her engagement with political and intellectual trends over time, track verbal patterns, and expand knowledge of her writing and revision processes throughout her prolific career.
